Can DMSO (a type of solvent) dissolve very fine particle of Hydroxyapatite (HAp)?

December 17, 2009

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a material similar to the natural teeth. I have a project to determine which solvent besides of acids that can totally dissolve hydroxyapatite. I heard that DMSO can dissolve almost anything. Is it true? I really need help here. Many thanks.

I could not find anything specific on the web, but believe DMSO would not touch hydroxyapatite.

DMSO is approved by the FDA for human use, and I have tried it out myself.

Any problems with teeth and bones dissolved by DMSO would have been noticed a long time ago.

One source has a statement on tooth enamel and DMSO:

“DMSO has the ability to pass through every tissue and Cell Membrane of the body except the Enamel of Teeth, fingernails and Hair without destroying the integrity of these tissues and Cell Membranes (i.e. it is a membrane penetrate).”
